We are all surrounded by darkness. And we are all drawn to the light.
The Orkney Islands north of Scotland are steeped in stories of selkies, seal folk who swim in cold ocean waters and shed their skins to sing and dance on land. One young girl named Isla uses legends of selkie brides to understand her parents’ troubled marriage and navigate her strained relationship with her mother. As Isla comes of age, she confronts the sacred points of transformation found between sea and land, nature and civilization, and past and present, uncovering the key to her identity.
Selkie Moon is a novella for all those who believe stories can illuminate the deepest and darkest waters of the human soul.

Selkie Moon isn’t just a lovely story about the sleek creatures who swim in the sea and doff their skins to dance on the land; through the lens of Isla’s journey, Jarvis offers us a thoughtful narrative about the choice to cast off the limitations imposed by others and fully claim ourselves by the light of our own mirror moon—a perfect read for divisive times.
A selkie story told, so freshly and tenderly, from the daughter’s perspective, Jarvis's debut novella offers a moving and memorable portrait of a family whose conflicts ignite with feral, fabulist sparks–but also speak to (and critique) the recognizable tensions of gendered expectations. It’s a lush tale that explores the way convention can threaten to dim the wild beauties of those who are different, and how compassion for each other’s story matters. Its vivid, lyrical, dreamy landscapes–the craggy coasts of the Orkney Islands, where “wet mists...purled along the shoreline,” in the “twilight of the simmer dim”–offer a gateway into dreams and tales of “oceans stained purple by rains that fell from ruby-studded skies.” And oh, the sentences! What a delight to the senses they were. I was swept up in the prose and in Isla’s world, and left thinking about the power of stories, of self-as-story–and the capacity we have, if we just learn to use it, to tell our truest selves and each other into being, into acceptance and understanding.
Set on a timeless-feeling community in the Orkney Islands, this selkie tale sings with beauty. Jarvis writes with gorgeous, confident language that draws the reader into the depths of her tale like siren song. Her characters are flawed and complex as they fight the pull of what is traditionally a family tragedy. Their story is moving, hopeful, and above all, compelling. Selkie Moon is as breathtaking as the moon on still water and as irresistible as the tide.
Kelly Jarvis writes with care, insight, and compassion as she explores selkie folklore in this novella. Her story is filled with lyrical prose and such loving descriptions of the ocean that I was convinced Kelly must be a selkie herself. The passage about swimming with the humpback whales is particularly stunning. It's magic like this that had me captivated throughout her story.
I love that selkie lore became a way to explore the identities that are erased, abandoned, sacrificed or forgotten with familial roles like motherhood. That something as mysterious as a selkie's oceanic life is equated with who mothers were before their children came along is standing ovation levels of excitement for this folklore enthusiast.
This is an enchanting family story told through the lens of the selkie legend. I enjoyed how Jarvis deftly weaves folkloric inspiration into beautiful prose, and I finished this book in one day, that's how enraptured I was. The writing was so vivid, there were moments where I had a visceral reaction (the webbing, omg!), and the imagery resonated across multiple other stories I've encountered, making me think of other (occasionally toxic) relationships in folklore and fairy tales, other forms of bodily violation and consent, other ways of loving your family and yourself and not knowing how to pick between the two... there's just so much to enjoy here. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy!
Selkie Moon by Kelly Jarvis is a wonderful reimagining of selkie folklore. Luscious language and rich images drip scent and color allowing the reader to fall into the world of the Orkney Islands...For Isla, home is a precarious balance between the wildness of the waves and the safety of the land.
Jarvis has created a memorable and unique tale that goes against many of the classic tropes and stereotypes of retellings. This reimagining of the selkie is still classic but builds into the extraordinary.
An engrossing read that sucks the reader right in from the first page. This is a bittersweet family story and a splendid tale of growing up. If you love magic and myth and amazingly strong world building for a novella, this story is definitely for you! Every character is well drawn, and you’ll stay hooked right to the end!
Selkie Moon is a thoughtful, powerful exploration of the effect of {a selkie} relationship not only on the man and the selkie, but also on the children of that union. The story is told from the point of view of their daughter, the one who will ultimately find the hidden selkie skin. What, asks the story, must be like for her, growing up aware there’s something different about her parents from others, aware of the tension between them but not understanding what’s going on? Her responses change subtly as she grows older: from a little girl relying totally on her mother, to an intelligent child trying to make sense of what’s going on round her, to the pre-teen who wants to be accepted by her peers, to a teenager pushing against the idea of being different, finally to a young woman who understands what it is that makes her different. In a lovely piece of symbolism, the story’s triumphant conclusion plays out, like the the opening, under the moon and on the stormy shores of Orkney, bringing it full circle – or full moon.
It’s a coming-of-age tale, in the timeless vein and tradition of the modern fairy tale. The story takes place on the Orkney Islands, an archipelago north of the Scottish mainland. We follow Isla, a young girl, as she navigates adolescence, trying to find a balance between the wild, intuitive, and almost feral impulses that live inside of her––compulsions that echo in the blood that she shares with her mother––and the expectations of the human world, so pressed by her father, in a desperate attempt to keep his little family from being pulled apart by their other-than-human inclinations.
An observant girl, she watches her parents with growing unease, seeing the wildness that they both possess in their passionate, mercurial love. And oh, to rectify such a home-life with how the villagers speak of her family in whispers and rumor; or with the labyrinthine path of heightened emotions in a growing body that is suddenly at odds with the burgeoning truth of whom you really are. The push and pull of it all seems to emulate the very waves themselves, all at the mercy of the great, silver moon, that barely seems to set, as it looms over the Atlantic. We are carried with Isla, on the smooth and scintillating prose of Jarvis, to discover her truth, her balance, and together we must ask the necessary question: how could one ever find their way through such turbulent currents, to build a life that they might, at last, call their own?
The rhythmic prose comes soft, comforting, like the words themselves were borne of the sea-foam that folds itself along the island shores of North Ronaldsay, and yet as with any selkie story, there was an allure, a mystique that calls you in from the first page, and invites you for a twilight walk in the “simmer dim”, where you never know what, or who, you might discover in the fading light. I could not put this book down, dear friends, and I urge you to give it a read.
Selkie Moon is a beautiful tale about a young girl finding herself and her power. Jarvis' descriptions are poetic and so detailed that readers can almost smell the salt air as they are captured in the essence of this love story. Selkie Moon is a fabulous escape from reality.
An exquisite tale of mothers and daughters, love and sacrifice, mystery and magic.
Using selkie folklore, Kelly Jarvis has crafted a beautiful and wise coming-of-age story of a girl living in the Orkney Islands. The setting is vivid and compelling, the characters flawed and complex, and the story of love and sacrifice is timeless. Isla's sense of being "other," her frustrations with her parents, and her struggles to fit in will resonate with anyone who recalls adolescence. Highly recommend!
It is {the} folkloric approach to family that gives Selkie Moon its edge over other family dramas, a certain beauty that both separates the story from modern life but also draws parallels to the realist’s world. Through language alone, Jarvis paints a world that is easy for a reader to be swallowed into.
And the setting—with its aurora borealis, its “simmer dim,” and its islands that, “float in the frigid waters where the North Sea kisses the Atlantic”—is one that feels almost fairytale-esque, a dreamy place that makes the family conflict so much more tense. As Isla realizes that the magical world she lives in isn’t so perfectly divine, the experience turns both devastating and enlightening.
In just over 100 short pages, Kelly Jarvis has crafted a unique addendum to selkie folklore, expanding it beyond the mere seduction that leads to selkies shedding their seal skins, their wildness, to struggle through the tame and mild life of the land. She has bent the folklore into a relatable story about family and choices.
Kelly Jarvis’s prose is immersive and evocative—I could hear the waves crashing, feel the pull of the sea, and see the ache in Isla’s heart.
As a mother raising a daughter, this story touched something deep in me. The mother-daughter relationship, in particular, was layered and honest in a way that felt both personal and universal. If you grew up loving the ocean or feel drawn to stories that sit between myth and reality, Selkie Moon will speak to your soul.
It's a short but stunning read, Selkie Moon is a heartfelt meditation on stories, family, and the way myth can help us navigate even the deepest waters of the human soul.
Kelly Jarvis has written a masterful love letter to the wild corners of the world, the women who walk them, and the stories that have sprung from both, Five-Star read!
A story about family, growing up and legacy.
The opening chapter is very lyrical, beginning with a father telling a story to his daughter, and a daughter telling us of his place in the world. Immediately after reading the opening chapter, I checked to see if the author wrote poetry, and she is in fact known for her poetry as well as her fiction. The rest of the book settles into more of a fairy tale rhythm, the language becoming more simplistic and less obscured by metaphor but still harkening to that oral tradition--this book feels made to be read aloud.
Selkie Moon is an utterly enchanting novel that seamlessly blends fairytale and folklore. It's difficult to believe this is Jarvis' debut novella! She writes with such captivating prose and vivid details that you feel a part of the story. If you wanted to be a mermaid as a child, this is for you.
Isla grows up in the Scottish Orkneys, in a chiaroscuro of light and dark, ocean and land, secrets and hard truths. Her mother, drawn to the sea, never speaks, and her younger brother, sweet tempered Callan with the webbed fingers, speaks in a language all his own. When Isla’s mother disappears, the remaining family moves in with her father’s parents, who are far less tolerant of Isla and Callan's peculiarities.
No fear, there is wisdom and love and a happy ending in this beautifully written tale. The language is luminous, the story legendary, and the overarching truths inspiring. Keep telling your stories and writing your own!
An astonishing story! Poetically beautiful writing; compulsively readable- I could not put it down. I love how the themes of family are explored in this novella and how love endures- it was really unexpected to me- and of course the magical weaving of the selkie lore. So unlike anything I’ve ever read; a true gem!! It’s unusual to find writing so deeply moving anymore and I will read this again and again.
“The selkies come from miles away to bathe their seal skins in the full moon’s magic”… enchanting!!
And the setting of the Orkney Islands, truly unforgettable.
Highly recommend!
I was gifted an early reading of this novella and I am truly thankful to Kelly Jarvis for reaching out to me. I truly enjoyed this novella which is based on the folklore and legends of Selkie Brides. This was a new concept for me, but going into it as a fan of fantasy and romance I was surprised by how many emotions these 100 pages elicited. This novella is a mixture of Isla’s coming of age story with the story of her parent’s tumultuous but relationship that was also based in love. Although the story was based in folklore, I found it very relatable with so many different messages to learn and reflect on. The author even adds a little twist at the end that pulls on my hopeless romantic heart. I highly recommend it even if it is not something you would typically read (which was the case for me).
Absolutely loved Selkie Moon. This is a short novella, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t jam packed with an amazing story. The big theme in Selkie Moon is family. It is a coming of age story mixed with the lore and magic of Selkies. Such a great read.
Once I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down! It is a beautiful story about love, family, and ultimate sacrifices. Kelly Jarvis used her abilities to spin a tale and make it uniquely her own. It gives a whole new meaning to Wild One!
Selkie Moon is a haunting and poetic tale that blends Orkney folklore with the tender struggles of family and identity. Through Isla's eyes, the selkie legends become a mirror of love, loss, and transformation. A beautifully written novella that lingers long after the last page.
What a gorgeous, romantic read. Selkie Moon is an intergenerational story of magic, secrets, family, and the sea. The sense of place and emotions is profound. Highly recommend!
